Our Angels Have Arrived

New Murals Installed in the Sanctuary
After months of anticipation, the newest additions to St. Mary’s sanctuary are finally in place.
This morning, August 11, the five angel murals were installed in the sanctuary, completing another important step in the ongoing beautification of our historic church. Now that they are in their intended home, parishioners can experience the full effect of these beautiful images as part of our worship space.
Looking toward the altar, the angels appear from left to right:
St. Raphael — the archangel associated with healing and the patron of travelers.
St. Gabriel — the messenger of God, best known for announcing the Incarnation to Mary.
Two unnamed angels with thuribles — these angels remind us of the heavenly worship that surrounds the earthly celebration of the Mass. Because they are unnamed, perhaps you might even imagine one as your own guardian angel, faithfully praying alongside you.
St. Michael — the great defender of God's people and the patron of the Church's protection against evil.
Together, these five figures draw our eyes and hearts toward the altar, reminding us that when we gather for Mass, we are joining in something far greater than what we can see. The angels are continually praising God, and through the liturgy, we are invited to join their worship.
The murals are more than beautiful additions to our church. They are reminders of the communion of heaven and earth and of the unseen spiritual reality that surrounds every celebration of the Eucharist.
Next time you are at Mass, take a moment to look toward the sanctuary and meet these new members of our parish's visual story. Consider which angel catches your attention—and perhaps offer a prayer through his intercession.
