National Foster Care Month

May is National Foster Care Month. Nearly 400,000 children in the U.S. foster care system are waiting for safe, loving homes. Each of these numbers is a child with a name, a family longing for healing, a story waiting to unfold. In every foster or adoption journey, LOVE makes the difference.

This month, we celebrate the powerful stories of Catholic families who opened their hearts and homes to children in answer to God’s call.

Julia, a foster mom, decided that she could do more; she started working with a group in her community to build the “Hope House,” where children entering foster care can go for a meal, clean clothes, a bath, and a comfortable place to sleep until they have a more permanent placement. Julia wrote: “Our priest asked me one day why I had this connection with children in care; he wondered if I had been adopted or seen it in some way in my life. My only answer was ‘because God told me to.’ I truly believe this is the calling of the Church.”

Gabriela and Will had just one weekend to discern if they were ready to adopt a baby with Down Syndrome. They have not regretted their “yes.” Gabriela’s older daughter calls her new sister “my treasure and my joy.” She says, “I can’t imagine a world without her.” The whole family feels the same.

After Heather lost her first husband, she found herself saying goodbye to her dream of raising a big family. But a few years later, she met Matthew. They each came to their union with three daughters, and Matthew was open to Heather’s longing for more children through fostering. Now with a full house, Heather says, “Often, we are told what a blessing we are to these children. Each time I am stunned by friends and strangers’ affirmations. Can they not see the blessing received is far greater than anything given?

The majority of families continue to foster when they are supported by a community. Not everyone can foster, but everyone can support families that do. Pray for children in foster care. Support foster families. How is God calling you to love?

Let’s make sure every child is seen, known, and loved. Learn how you can make a difference at springsoflove.org.
