In the Level 2 (ages 6-9) Catechesis of the Good Shepherd atrium, we often present the parables of “The Found Sheep” and “The Found Coin” (Luke 15: 1-10) together and discuss with the children the similarities and differences between the two. Although the titles of the parables typically use the word “lost” our initial focus when these parables are first introduced is the rejoicing involved when both the sheep and the coin are found.

During a recent atrium session, third-grader Lucas J. responded in a very wonderful and unique way after pondering the Found Coin parable… he created a “Holy Comic Book” depicting the parable and was sure to include the important verse after the woman calls together her friends and neighbors: “Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost coin.”
Jesus concludes the parable in verse 10 by saying: “In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” As the children continue to grow with these parables, we go deeper in our discussions about the lessons Jesus has for us within these stories. We know that at times our relationship with God may become difficult and separation can occur through sin… whether we wander away from the flock through our own actions or intentions like the sheep, or we may find ourselves “lost” without even realizing it, like the inanimate coin. But in either case, God doesn’t care how that separation occurred; He only wants the relationship restored… and we are always welcomed to the Sacrament of Reconciliation as a means to make this happen, and then there will be time for rejoicing!
Thank-you, Lucas, for bringing this parable to life through your artwork and reminding us all about God’s love and mercy and the joyfulness involved when our relationship with Him is restored.
