At the Easter Vigil, St. Mary Catholic Church witnessed something extraordinary.

This year, 39 individuals entered fully into the life of the Church, a moment marked by prayer, sacrifice, and the quiet work of God over many months. As the Church moved from darkness into light, these men, women, and children stepped forward to receive the sacraments and begin a new life in Christ.

Among them were 13 catechumens who received all three Sacraments of Initiation, including Baptism. Three children were baptized. Sixteen candidates, already baptized in other Christian traditions, were received into full communion through Confirmation and the Eucharist. Seven Catholics completed their Sacraments of Initiation.

Many shared powerful experiences of grace during the Mass, including one participant who said:

“After communion, I knelt and it felt like for the first time I was at peace and could receive God in a way I never could before.”

What makes this moment even more striking is the growth. Just one year ago, the parish’s OCIA program included 15 participants. This year, that number more than doubled. The increase reflects not only what is happening at St. Mary, but a broader movement. Across the Diocese of Columbus, more than 500 individuals were baptized this Easter, compared to around 200 the year before.

God is at work.

And yet, this night is not only about numbers. It is about lives changed and hearts turned toward Christ. One candidate commented:

"It’s up there with life events like when my girls were born."

It is also a testament to the faithful work of many. Clergy, staff, and volunteers walked alongside these individuals throughout their journey, offering formation, encouragement, and prayer. Their dedication made this moment possible, but more importantly, it made each person feel known and welcomed.

As a parish, we give thanks for God’s abundant goodness and for the prayers He has answered. At the same time, we are reminded that the work continues. The call to pray for the conversion of hearts remains as urgent as ever!

If you are interested in joining the Catholic Church, please let us know here. Our OCIA classes for next Easter will begin in August.
