As a people of faith dedicated to the life and dignity of the human person, we must work together as a society to promote the common good and combat what Pope Benedict XVI has consistently called
the “scandal of hunger.”
On every first Friday for a year, eat meals that cost only as much as is allotted for a family of your size by the USDA Modified Thrifty Food Plan (see web link below - You will need to divide the
weekly cost by seven.) This plan is used as the basis for food stamps (i.e. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP). Many individuals or families may notice a disparity between
the cost of their normal meals and the amount allotted in the food plan. The “cutting back” that will likely be required in order to stay “in budget” can be considered a
form of fasting.

East African Drought:
The drought in East Africa, complicated by political instability in Somalia, has lead to desperate conditions for millions of people. Your Church is responding through Catholic Relief
Services (CRS) that has worked in the region for decades. Many CRS projects that you have supported over the years have made communities better able to withstand this drought. Many
others are still suffering, including Somalis who live beyond the reach of humanitarian aid and are fleeing to neighboring countries seeking help. CRS is responding to their needs.
Please show your solidarity in the following ways:
· Please pray for the people of East Africa.
· Donate to the East Africa Emergency Fund; checks payable to Catholic Relief Services can be sent to the Office for Social Concerns, 197 East
Gay St., Columbus, OH 43215 – write “East African Fund” in the memo section
· Learn more: contact the diocesan CRS director at 614-241-2540 or ecordle@colsdioc.org; and
visit: www.crs.org for continuous updates on our response.
