Volunteer schedule for St. Mary gym |
St. Mary offers a Boy’s and Girl’s Basketball program for all eligible children attending the school or active in PSR entering grades
4th-8th. Practices start in November. Practices may occur in our gym as well as in one of 3-4 gymnasiums throughout Delaware such as Smith, Conger, Mingo, etc. (St. Mary gym is normally used for
older grades).
Games are played for 2 weeks (or so) in December until late February, normally for 9 weeks total, on Saturdays or Sundays. In 2009, we fielded 14 teams with the 4th, 5th grade boys girls having two teams, as well as 6th grade boys having two teams. 4th through 6th grade are separated evenly according to talent and the 7th – 8th grades may be divided across Competitive and/or Recreational Divisions. Games will be played throughout the Diocese in other school gyms. Due to the size of our court, the SMAA attempts to host 7th or 8th grade games, dependent upon the Diocese’s needs, parish availability, and volunteer availability.
At the end of the regular season, each team is separated into tournament divisions, by regular season records. Therefore, teams that have similar records will play over the next week or two and have a chance at the Championship.
The practice schedule will be divided amongst several gyms. if there are PSR children on a team, practice must start after 4 p.m. Boys' and Girls' game schedules are not normally released until the Wednesday prior to the start of league or tournament play. The SMAA purchases individual trophies for regular season or tournament champions, normally presented at the season ending banquet in March.
